(This is an ongoing series in which I identify ways that I benefit from non-economic privilege, generally from being straight, white, and male. Sometimes only the “straight” will matter, or only the “white”, or “male”, or some combination. I will also season the series with times that I specifically do not benefit from privileges others enjoy, such as association with the dominant religious culture, and how those times have helped me recognize the privilege that I do enjoy.)
“Week” #9: Real Life
If you’ve been following the #PrivilegeOfTheWeek series, firstly, thank you, and secondly, I’m sorry. Because I missed the entire month of December.
And nothing bad happened. Which is a privilege.
Nobody is going to generalize my personal failings as applying to all members of my race or gender, or that my point is automatically invalid because I missed an arbitrary, self-imposed deadline. Nobody is saying “That white dude couldn’t keep that up, so White Male Privilege just isn’t a thing.”
So, Privilege of the Week #9 is, when real life intervenes, I am not assumed to be representing my race and gender at all times.
